Gersfeld – The focus of the evening in the festively decorated town hall was a special anniversary that is being celebrated this year: 100 years of the Wasserkuppe Aviation School. “Gersfeld is known for its aviation,” said Mayor Dr. Steffen Korell (CDU), before welcoming Markus Kurz, Vice President of the Society for the Promotion of Gliding on the Wasserkuppe (GFS), as a guest speaker.

He looked back at the history of flying on the Wasserkuppe in general, and particularly at the founding and development of the flying school. Kurz, who – as he reported – grew up with a father who was "infected with the flying bug" and had "a wonderful coming of age on the mountain of aviators," showed historical pictures of the first flight attempts in the 1920s. "This is where the foundation for modern flying was laid," Kurz remarked, clearly impressed. The 210 guests in the town hall were also impressed by the many historical pictures.
